Major Changes to the General Assembly

Year Change
1830 Districts modified. Number of delegates and senators increased but not their terms.
1851 More district modification. Changed terms of delegates to two years and staggered senate terms to one-half elected every second year.
1864 All senators elected at the same time, every four years.
1869 Half of the senate seats were elected every second year.
1902 Members of the House of Delegates serve two-year terms and members of the Senate serve four-year terms, elected midway through terms of governors.
